KUNG FU PANDA is a pretty good animated film from Dreamworks. My kids enjoyed it a lot - Tay, who joins me on the podcast, gave it a nine-and-a-half out of ten. I enjoyed it as well - especially Ian McShane (aka the aptly-named Al Swearengen from DEADWOOD) as the evil Tai Lung - and it’s got a good message for the kiddies, as most of these films do.

RETURNER is a terrific 2002 Japanese film I caught on DVD during the week. It’s part-Hong Kong triad film, part-Matrix, part-Terminator, and part-Transformers. Lots of fun and cool scenes, definitely check it out!

That was my initial impression when I heard that one of the best character actors working in Hollywood was making a sequel to one of the worst superhero films made since Batman had nipples.

Robert De Niro’s second time out as director hasn’t had the most warm reviews of his career but I really enjoyed the film. A great cast (Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Wiliam Hurt, Robert De Niro, John Turturro, Joe Pesci) and a great script by Eric Roth (Munich, Forrest Gump… okay, forget I mentioned that bit) and a fascinating subject matter (the rise of the CIA) are just a few things this film has going for it.

On this podcast I talk about the film and also reveal a little of the backstory (Allen Dulles, the Bay of Pigs, etc) behind the film, which is actually only a fictional account of the CIA.

I give the film 4 out of 5.

“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”

I recently pulled out Bob Zemeckis’ 1985 classic “Back To The Future” to show my kids. They were reluctant at first but really got into it and it was a joy to watch their tiny minds being dazzled by the concept of time travel. So I did some research about the film and thought I’d share some of the highlights with you.

On the show you will discover:

Who was first cast to play Marty McFly, and shot a whole month of footage, before being sacked and replaced with Michael J Fox?

Which dumb-ass studio executive wanted to call the film “Spaceman From Pluto” because he didn’t think anyone would want to see a film with the word “future” in the title?

Did John De Lorean really get busted for cocaine trafficking?

And a whole lot more.

Of course the most interesting question is - What if Michael J Fox had had a real time machine back in 1985 and could have jumped 20 years to see his own real future?? Would he have still made “Doc Hollywood”?

My man Daniel Craig… no I mean Daniel Krause aka Dark Meat aka Ladies Love Dark M joins me on the podcast today to talk about CASINO ROYALE aka James Bond 21.

It’s a long one - an hour and twenty! Almost as long as the film itself and we didn’t spend anywhere NEAR the $150 million they did.

On the show we talk about our reactions to the film, the production costs and current box office returns, the plot, Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Caterina Murino, Sir Richard Branson, the producers, the screenwriters, parkour… hell we just don’t know when to quit!

I hope you enjoy it (and live long enough to get to the end).

Oh by the way, at the end, during a short rant about Melbourne boy Eric Bana, I talk a little about his film CHOPPER. If you haven’t seen it, here’s the trailer. Hope it wets your appetite.

So yesterday I watched the god-awful “Superman Returns” again on DVD and it prompted me to go out and watch Superman II again so I could recall exactly how Lois Lane is supposed to have become pregnant. I knew the salient details but I wanted to see it for myself. As I watched it with my kids (and reminded myself how terrible it was), I did a bit research on the film and discovered this whole story about the brand new “Richard Donner Cut” which was in the cinema in the US in November 2006 and is now out on DVD (in time for your Super-Sized Xmas stockings). This prompted me to resurrect the Movie Show podcast. We also talk about Little Miss Sunshine, which despite my huge reservations, actually isn’t a chick flick and is very enjoyable, even if you see it like I did with a group of straight blokes.

Joining me today is my friend and giant Superman nerd Scott Sherman.

Last night (Friday, 25 August 2006) I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Melbourne premiere of Kevin Smith’s new film "Clerks II" followed by a three hour Q & A with Smith himself. The Astor Theatre was packed full of devoted fans who laughed their asses off throughout the entire film and then laughed perhaps even more during Smith’s talkfest. Smith introduced the film, walking up a steep flight of stairs and saying something about if he had fallen down them it would have been "more embarrassing than "Jersey Girl". Hehe.

First let’s talk about the film.

For those of you who haven’t seen it yet and who might be thinking "Meh, the last few Smith films didn’t quite hit the mark, I might give this one a miss", I say unto thee - GET YOURSELF TO THE CINEMA (opens in broad release across Australia on August 31st).

This film is a cock knocker.

The audience at the session last night - admittedly, Smith fans - laughed themselves silly and cheered at the end. This is one HELL of a sequel. Now - I’m a fan of Smith’s. Huge fan. Tried to get in contact with the guy so I could get a podcast interview with him while he was here but "his people" didn’t get back to me. Anyway… I’m a huge fan but I thought all of the films since Chasing Amy fell a bit flat. Not that I don’t give the guy massive kudos for doing what he does - hell, I’m not making films. Good luck to the fat bastard. But I just didn’t think the last few films were as good as Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy which are all, IMHO, classics. Clerks II is up there with them. It is tighter that a fish’s asshole. The laughs are non-stop and the requisite Smith themes of finding a purpose, hetero-male-on-male love, and modern relationships are all covered off in perfect style.

Dante and Randall are back and as funny and annoying as they were when we first met them 12 years ago. The Quick Stop has burned down (because Randall left the coffee pot on overnight again) and they are now working at a Moobys for manager Rosario Dawson, along with young Christian nerdy colleague Elias. Dante is engaged to a gorgeous blonde (played by Smith’s real life wife) but he has also found love with Becky (Rosario Dawson). During the film he needs to decide between leaving New Jersey (the movie takes place during his last 24 hours in NJ) to head out to Florida with his soon-to-be-bride to work for her father in a car wash or stay in NJ with manager Becky. Add to this mix Jay and Silent Bob, very short cameos from Jason Lee and Ben Affleck and Ethan Suplee (and a milk lady), a dance sequence, and you have a very entertaining film. As i said earlier, it’s got a million laughs that all worked.

Then we got to the Q & A with writer/director/editor/actor Smith which was scheduled to run for 90 minutes but instead ran for over three hours, past midnight, and only finished because the cinema kicked everyone out.

I’ve made a quick list of subjects Smith touched on (mostly prompted by questions from the audience) to give you an idea of the breadth of the evening:

pluto is no longer a planet which leads him to believe that a death star really does exist
getting sued by darth vader
the joel siegel story
superman returns, how much it sucked
how life changed since 94
yes, jen (his wife) is a milf
storyboard that had silent Bob dead pulled down from "train wreck" after an hour deliberately to get people talking
clerks animated movie Harrvey Weinstein wanted a theatrical version. "Clerks Sell Out", will probably come out on dvd. Smith yet to write script. Storyline - Randall & Dante make a film about being clerks.
A favourite moment - when Homer Simpon said "prove me wrong silent bob"
Another fav. moment, 1997, Ben Affleck goes to Thanksgiving dinner at Spielberg’s house, Lucas is there, Ben asks if he’s ever heard of "Clerks", Lucas replies "Yes, Death Star contractors, very funny".
How his sister feels about being cast as the animal masterbator in the original film
how does he feel about Affleck / Damon / Lee success
Mewes’ rehab to get off of heroin & crack addiction
Taking jay to meth clinic
AfflecK in same rehab, Jay says "check out this morose muthafucka"
Jay driving around with a deployed airbag really happened
Smith likes to LOWER expectations of his films to people treat him like a retarded Kid
How hard it was to get Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson to make the new film
Anderson runs a successful tile import business, never wanted to be an actor, has a love/hate relationship with the first movie, was just a customer at quick stop when Kevin was writing script
Keeps pitching tv show to HBO, gets accepted, but never makes it
37 episodes set in view askew universe
If first film hadn’t worked he would have Kept working at quick stop
Mewes had been doing the tuck thing for years, before Silence Of The Lambs
Duchovny was nearly in J&SBSB, wanted to play Cock knocker
big fan of rim job but Kevin Is a no for ass to mouth
big fan of Internet porn
spend ages describing Brazilian fart porn
Kevin’s brother gay married 12 years to a man
5 fav films:
jaws
jfk
do the right thing
a man for all seasons
last temptation of Christ
Clerks II already made $24 million from budget of $5
maybe in his 40s or 50s will make a Clerks III
likes to make up his own curse words
degrassi next gen going back to the well inspiration for Clerks II
advice to young film makers: write it and make it
"if a chimp like me can direct…"
next movie is a horror film, wants to cast no regulars just unknowns
jon peters rise to power
commercial failure of Jersey Girl didnt hurt his career, Gigli copped the blame for it
put him off big budgets for a while
prefers writing editing & q&a to directing
myspace addicted
loves friend approval, has 96000 friends
jay was on myspace a year and a half before Kevin. Jay gets laid from it.
MySpace brought in more people than view askew.
Shannon Doherty’s german attack dog
On directing his wife make out with other people - he likes to watch
she was sposed to play becKy but Weinstein wanted a name
if she was making out with affleck he might be worried but not o’halloran, women trade up but not trade over
backlash from prince - Smith walked out with the nda from Prince World in his pocket. The film he shot is being turned into a jehovahs witness recruitment film by Prince
Would he open a secret stash in Australia
The success of Clerks had a lot to do with timing. People felt over educated, under employed.
His fascination with Koala’s taking a poo
Will there be a sequel to Dogma?
His thoughts on the "brown coats"
hasnt seen firefly but mewes is a big fan
loves his fans to death
which is why this 90 minute Q&A now running over 3 hours
The story of Walt Flanagan’s dog - "Kill the baby brodie"
thought about buying the quick stop which was his fav Job outside of this one
rst video is shuttered
passion of the clerks original title people hated it
On getting slagged on entourage (cool with it)
because you edit your own films does the film change much from the original vision uses avid
how Mewes feels about smith putting his story out there, the story about mewes fucking Nicole Richie in a bathroom
The pussy troll scene inspired by Mewes who has fucked 300 chicks
harvey wanted him to show the troll in the film

Come to think of it, isn’t it time for another Rambo film? Wouldn’t you love to see Rambo in Iraq, hunting down terrorists, only to discover that …. oh shit. It’s in pre-production! I just went to IMDB and there it is. I’m in heaven. I was going to suggest that he goes to Iraq and finds out that Col. Trautman is still alive and working for the Pentagon to stir up trouble in Iraq, you know, lead a team of blackops to blow up a few Sunni temples and blame it on the Shi’ites, or vice versa, so Bush can go “well, heck, they are blowing themselves up, we need to save ‘em from themselves.”

I finally saw SYRIANA today and I couldn’t wait for the next Movie Show podcast (Ewan’s getting ready to head to the US to cover the Razzies and I’m travelling as well) to tell you about it.

This film is the crowning achievement so far in Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney’s Section Eight production company. If the rumours are true, then it could also be one of the last films we see out of Section Eight, which in the last couple of years has produced such excellent titles as:

Good Night and Good Luck
The Jacket
Criminal
Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind

Okay, they were also behind the Ocean’s Eleven series (with Ocean’s Thirteen scheduled for 2007), but I can forgive them this big budget fluff if it funds everything else.

So, on to SYRIANA. This is the second film to be directed by Stephen Gaghan, his directorial debut being the little-seen ABANDON from 2002. He’s best known for having written the screenplay for Soderbergh’s film TRAFFIC, for which both guys won an Oscar.

Like TRAFFIC, SYRIANA is a very serious film. Instead of the drug business, this time Gaghan focuses his attention on the dirty aspects of the oil business and the geo-political machinations of the USA and the Middle East that keep the oil flowing - to the USA.

There are several complex plotlines interwoven in this story but, as Roger Ebert pointed out (hell, I’m agreeing with Ebert??? what has the world come to?!), you aren’t supposed to follow the plot - you’re supposed to be surrounded by it, overwhelmed by it.

If you don’t walk away from this film bothered as hell about we are going to do to divorce ourselves from our addiction to black gold, then I disown you. I’ll talk about it more when we do the next show. In the meantime, go see it. Now.

The Day the Saucers Came

That day, the saucers landed. Hundreds of them, golden,
Silent, coming down from the sky like great snowflakes,
And the people of Earth stood and stared as they descended,
Waiting, dry-mouthed to find what waited inside for us
And none of us knowing if we would be here tomorrow
But you didn’t notice it because

That day, the day the saucers came, by some coincidence,
Was the day that the graves gave up their dead
And the zombies pushed up through soft earth
or erupted, shambling and dull-eyed, unstoppable,
Came towards us, the living, and we screamed and ran,
But you did not notice this because

(…continues…)

The nominations for the 26th Golden Raspberry Awards were announced in Hollywood this morning. The full list is at The Razzies website, with the awards ceremony taking place the night before the Oscars in Los Angeles on March 4th.

Along with coverage from ABC, CBS, TPN, FOX and NBC are a number of international organisations-

- Hold on… TPN? Yes, that’s right folks! The Podcast Network will be at The Red Carpet, covering the event for an extra special one hour “Razzies” show on The Movie Show. Host Ewan Spence and his Kilt will be there with microphone in hand, grabbing interviews with all the nominees, award winners, members of the Razzie Acadamey, and anyone else who decides to turn up to the celebration of all that is bad in Hollywood from 2005.

Often called Tinsel Town’s tackiest Trophy, the Razzie Award itself is an intentionally cheapjack tchotchke featuring a golf-ball-sized, handcrafted RazzBerry atop a mangled Super 8 film reel that’s spray-painted gold and has an estimated street value of $4.97. Will The Rock get Worst Actor for his turn in Doom? Can Will Ferrrel walk away with Worst Remake for Bewitched? What about a Worst Supporting Actor for Alan Cummings? And will any of them follow Paul Verhoven and Halle Berry and turn up in the hope they can collect their awards?

We’ve no idea, but you’ll be able to get as close as you can to the berry best awards ceremony in Hollywood thanks to The Movie Show on The Podcast Network.

Director George Hickenlooper defended the script saying it was a “complex story about a wonderful young woman”.
I went to see GOOD NIGHT & GOOD LUCK tonight with my mate Michael Sewards and then we had a few beers and chatted about it afterwards. Yet again I feel the Section Eight / 2929 team, this time with the added money of Ebay Employee #001 Jeff Skoll, have knocked it out of the park. George Clooney has put together a brilliant cast, co-written an inspiring screenplay, and directed a tight, observant film that deserves all the accolades it has been getting. Let’s see… the guy has money, talent, looks, he’s as smooth as hell… how is this possible? Where are his demons? Anyway… go see it.

Mick and I also chatted about some of our other favourite films, including:

THE HITCHER
GET CARTER

and what a disgrace Sam Jackon’s career has been outside of the films he’s made with QT.

Well, if I’d bothered to watch the credits of THE JACKET as well (which I had finished watching on moments before recording the show) I would have known that it, too, was a Section Eight / Cuban production! I watched the extras on the DVD last night and you should take the time to check out the interview with director Maybury. It’s great stuff, especially when he openly states that he didn’t want Keira Knightley in the lead female role but was forced into it by Mandalay (Peter Guber’s production company). He ended up being pleased with the decision (and, come on, who WOULDN’T want to work with Keira???).

Anyway the bottom line is… I’m going to be actively looking for more SECTION EIGHT films. I think they are onto a winning formula.

Chuck Norris has counted to infinity. Twice.

Chuck Norris is 1/8th Cherokee. This has nothing to do with ancestry, the man ate a fucking Indian.

There is no chin behind Chuck Norris’ beard. There is only another fist.

Chuck Norris is the only man to ever defeat a brick wall in a game of tennis.

The quickest way to a man’s heart is with Chuck Norris’ fist.

Chuck Norris died ten years ago, but the Grim Reaper can’t get up the courage to tell him.

And what does Mr Norris think of these facts?

I’m not quite sure what to make of it. It’s quite surprising. I do know that boys will be boys, and I neither take offense nor take these things too seriously.

Fans of Commander Adama, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, or The Wolf should check out this 1998 article in New York magazine. I stumbled on it today while trying to find out what that finger maths thing was that Olomos used in Stand & Deliver. I’d love to teach that to my kids.

For those of you who don’t know the backstory, Lorraine Bracco was married to Harvey Keitel for several years. Let’s just say it was pretty stormy. Then she left him for Edward James Olmos and won custody of her daughter with Keitel. Then Olmos was charged (multiple times) with sexual molestation. It’s a long and twisted tale which brings an additional level to their current characters on TV. Can you imagine Commander Adama being charged with sexually molesting a 14 year old girl? Can you imagine Dr Jennifer Melfi snorting cocaine and giving her husband the finger in divorce court? (Actually, yes, I can imagine that one).
