untitled #74

<img src="http://www.chromasia.com/images/untitled_0074.jpg">
Like my previous two entries, this is a partial HDR; i.e. the foreground was created with FDRTools while the sky was dropped in from the original exposure. Unlike the previous two though, this one was constructed from a single RAW file rather than a bracketed sequence. The net result is that there's more noise in this one (though it's not especially obvious at this resolution) so a bracketed sequence would have produced a technically better image. In this case though it just wasn't possible as the plastic basket was vibrating in the wind; i.e. there would have been too much movement between the different frames to produce an HDR from multiple exposures.

It's not my favourite of the set, but I was pleased with how it turned out. I'm also glad that I went out yesterday, despite the rather fierce wind, as it's poured down today.

waves of light

<img src="http://www.chromasia.com/images/waves_of_light.jpg">
As I mentioned yesterday I'm currently writing a review of the Tamron AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] for Digital SLR User magazine so went up to Fleetwood this afternoon to try it out. It was a glorious afternoon - though rather cold and windy - and I got four shots that I'm happy with.

All the ones I'll be posting are partial HDR's, constructed with FDRTools. This one and tomorrow's were constructed from a three shot bracketed sequence, while the ones I'll be posting on Sunday and Monday were created from a single shot. In all four cases I've used the sky from the original shot (or one of the originals).

Of the four I think that the one I'll be posting on Monday is probably my favourite, followed by this one, then Sunday's, then tomorrow's - but I'm pretty happy with all of them.

Oh, and the only other thing I can tell you about them is that they were all shot with a 400D - which I've borrowed to use with the Tamron lens.

Libby, Fin and Tabby

<img src="http://www.chromasia.com/images/libby_fin_and_tabby.jpg">
My apologies for the total absence of updates over the last few days but we've been busy moving into a new office. Up until now Libby and I have run chromasia from a home office, but we got the opportunity to move into a new set of offices set up to support the creative industries so decided to give it a try.

All being well I should be back to posting more frequently in the near future. I'm currently writing a review of the Tamron AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] for Digital SLR User magazine so will be out and about over the next few days putting it through its paces. On that basis, I'd be interested to hear if any of you have used it as it's not a lens I've tried before.

As for this shot: it was taken last summer, when we took the kids to Centre Parcs, and is a shot of Libby, Finley and Tabitha. It's a single image HDR, processed with FDRTools then converted to black and white and toned (using a Curve) in Photoshop.

<img src="http://www.chromasia.com/images/untitled_0073.jpg">
Having rediscovered my previous image in a folder from early 2007 I thought I'd track back a bit further through the archives in search of something else to rescue ... and came across this one. Like the previous one it's a partial HDR; i.e. the helmet and foreground were produced with FDRTools, while the sky was dropped in from the original shot.

the entrance

<img src="http://www.chromasia.com/images/the_entrance.jpg">
I was browsing through a folder of old RAW files earlier today and came across this one. I did try to process it at the time, but couldn't come up with anything I liked. Anyway, motivated by the fact that I don't have anything else to put up, I thought I'd give it another try.

This time around I decided to try an HDR version so used Photomatix Pro to generate and tone map a pseudo-HDR image. If you take a look at the original, you'll see that this version has a lot more detail and texture, especially on the surface of the object:

.../archives/the_entrance.php

The rest of the changes were fairly straightforward (Curves, Hue/Saturation, and so on) other than that I used the sky from the original image, not the tone mapped version. If you've tried single shot HDR's you'll know that one of the major problems is that they can be quite noisy. This doesn't much matter for textured areas of an image - such as the sand and scratched object in this image - but can be very noticeable in smoother areas such as the sky.

As always, let me know what you think.

untitled #72

<img src="http://www.chromasia.com/images/untitled_0072.jpg">
Since I got back from Barcelona I've struggled to take any decent photographs, mostly I think because I'm lacking in inspiration at the moment. So, in an effort to kick-start some creativity, I went up to Fleetwood today with my Lensbaby. Unfortunately though, I didn't get anything I was especially happy with, other than part of this one. And in case it isn't obvious, this is two images - a lensbaby shot of the iron structure on the beach, overlaid by a shot of a cracked wall.

I realise this won't be to everyone's taste, but a) it's different, and b) I really like the how the different points of focus appears to be on different planes; i.e. part of the ironwork, some of the background, and so on.

And I haven't posted the EXIF data, as it isn't really relevant, but the beach shot was taken with the f/8.0 aperture insert.

it never rains

<img src="http://www.chromasia.com/images/it_never_rains.jpg">
Well, I don't know what sort of week you've all been having, but it's been a bit of a downhill journey at chez chromasia. Tabby and Finley have both got stinking colds and have both been waking up several times a night, so Libby and I are now half-dead, and my laptop decided to die on me a few hours before I was supposed to be giving a presentation on Monday evening. All in all, it's been a bit of a trial. Fortunately Tabby has been a bit better today, but Finley has been feeling decidedly sorry for himself.

All that said, we did manage to take the kids to the park for a while this afternoon and I managed to find a bit of time to try out my new lens, a Lensbaby 3G. If you've been visiting chromasia for a while you may remember that I posted some shots in 2005 taken with a Lensbaby 2.0, some of which I was quite pleased with (e.g. this one and this one). What I never really got the hang of though was the lack of control; i.e. the focus with the Lensbaby 2.0 can be continuously varied, but not locked. The Lensbaby 3G, on the other hand, allows you to lock the focus and, as a result, is considerably easier to use.

Anyway, this is a shot of Rhowan, taken at f/2.8, and the blur is a consequence of the lens; i.e. it wasn't added during post-production. And I know I've posted several portraits of Rhowan that aren't entirely dissimilar to this one, but it's a style that seems to suit her.

I can't remember what they were arguing about, and she was running around playing again two minutes later, but she did look very forlorn for the few seconds it took me to take this shot.

On a side note: Libby took some shots of me photographing the kids that I've posted here:

.../archives/helping_out.php

I was trying to photograph Harmony, who you can see running off in the top-right corner of the first shot, but I was slightly hampered by Tabitha's attempts to help out :-)
